Duck Life: the training-and-racing loop that a whole generation learned in computer class

Duck Life was released by Wix Games, a two-person studio in Brighton, England, in March 2010. It was a Flash game with a one-paragraph story — a tornado has destroyed your farm, one egg survived, and the only way to rebuild is to race the duck that hatches from it — and a design that turned out to have real staying power: three training minigames, each a small arcade game in its own right, feeding four stats that decide how the duck does on a race course made of running, flying and swimming sections. It spawned eight sequels and is still the game people mean when they say the name.

The build on ducklife.app is the modern browser remake of that first game, served from this domain rather than pulled from a portal, so it loads in a school Chromebook without a plugin and keeps your save in the browser. It has the same three trainers, the same Duck Shop with 1-coin seed, 10-coin Super Seed, 50-coin paint and 100-coin hats, and the same four race tiers — Beginner, Amateur, Expert and the World Championship — each locked until you have won the one before it.

How to reach the World Championship faster

  1. Run first, then split: Running Training is the easiest score to grow and the Beginner courses are mostly ground, so put the first few rounds there. After that, alternate Flying and Swimming: every course has both, and one weak skill costs more than one strong skill gains.
  2. Jump late in Running: Boulders roll at a steady speed. Start the jump when a boulder is about one duck-length away and you clear it; jump early and you land on it. The coins sit at jump height, so a well-timed jump collects them as well.
  3. Tap, do not hold, in Flying: Holding the left side sends the duck off the top of the screen and holding the right side puts it in the grass. Short taps, roughly one a second, hold a line through the coin trail.
  4. Feed before a race, not after: Energy drains while you train and race, and an empty bar in the last section of a course means a duck that slows to a walk. Buy seed (1 coin) or Super Seed (10 coins) and feed it right before the countdown.
  5. Spend coins on seed until the Amateur tier: Hats are 100 coins and paint is 50, and neither changes a stat. Prize money from the four Beginner races is the fastest coin income in the game, so bank it into energy and training time first.

Key features

  • Three trainers, three different games: Running is a one-button hurdle race, Flying is a glide with left/right lift, Swimming is a lane game on the arrow keys. Each score converts straight into that skill's level bar.
  • Four race tiers: Beginner (Green Valley, Rocky Cliff, Shallow Lake, Natural World), then Amateur, Expert and the World Championship. Each tier unlocks when the previous one is won, and every race mixes all three disciplines.
  • The Duck Shop: Seed for energy, Super Seed for a bigger refill, paint to recolour the duck and hats for the look. You start with four of each seed; coins come from training runs and race prizes.
  • Served from this domain, saved in your browser: The game files live on ducklife.app, not on a third-party portal that can vanish, and the save sits in your browser so the duck is still there tomorrow on the same computer.

Game info

Pro tip: The story slides at the start are skippable and the Skip button is the left of the two under the picture. Coins collected during a failed training run still count, so a short run for coins before a race is never wasted.

Frequently asked questions

What is Duck Life?

A 2010 game by Wix Games in which you hatch a duck, train its running, flying and swimming in three arcade minigames, keep its energy up with seed, and race it through four tiers to the World Championship. ducklife.app serves the browser remake of that original.

How do I train the duck?

On the farm screen pick Train Running (click to jump boulders), Train Flying (click the left half of the screen to rise, the right half to dip) or Train Swimming (arrow keys). The score at the end of each round fills that skill's level bar.

What does energy do, and how do I refill it?

Energy drains during training and races; when it is empty the duck slows right down. Buy Seed (1 coin) or Super Seed (10 coins) in the Duck Shop and feed it before a race. You start with four of each.

How do I unlock the Amateur, Expert and World Championship races?

Win the four races in the tier before it. Beginner has Green Valley, Rocky Cliff, Shallow Lake and Natural World; win all four and Amateur opens, and so on up to the championship.

Does my progress save?

Yes, in your browser on this site. The same browser on the same computer brings the duck back. Clearing site data or pressing Clear save data in Settings starts over with a new egg.

Are the Duck Life sequels here too?

Duck Life 2: World Champion, Duck Life 3: Evolution and the Lite version of Duck Life: Battle each have a page. Duck Life 4, 5, 6 and Adventure are not hosted yet because we could not find a clean, verified browser copy; the blog explains.
